10 players mentioned by Mike Tomlin following Thursday’s training camp practice
The Pittsburgh Steelers took to the practice field at St. Vincent College for training camp on Friday. Following practice, head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media about their second day on the field, even though it was cut short due to storms in the area. Since he was asked about a number of players, I am excited to bring back the players mentioned article to Steel Curtain Network for the 2025 season! Remember these are players where a specific question was asked during the Q&A period.
Chuck Clark
Coach Tomlin was asked what attributes attracted him to want to sign Chuck Clark.
“I’m just highly familiar with his intangibles. He’s got a really good relationship with the game. He’s a hard worker. He’s a really good communicator. His football character comes highly recommended.”
Coach Tomlin was asked when an available player formerly played for the Raven if it is a plus in his mind.
“I just view players as familiar or unfamiliar. I care less about who they played for. Because he played for the Ravens, I’m familiar with him, and that’s probably the thing that captures my attention more than anything. The familiarity component, it’s less about who he played for. There’s just so much of that in today’s game that I think it’s less of a story or an issue.”
Coach Tomlin was asked if he has someone who can still play in the post, if he feels like he needs somebody else there.
“That’s why we’re here. That’s something to be determined. In terms of his skill set. He’ll be given an opportunity to prove it.”
Broderick Jones
Coach Tomlin was asked what he wants to see from Broderick Jones coming into this camp.
“You know, I expect him to do what we drafted him to do. He was a left tackle prospect and a highly regarded one when he came out. He was a young guy when he came out. So, he’s had some on the job training and gained some experience in the meanwhile. I think it’s a big year for him. One that we can expect him to play varsity ball, a term that we like to use.”
Jalen Ramsey
Coach Tomlin was asked about retooling physicality in all areas and how Ramsey fits into that vision.
“We’re here to find out. You know, I’m certainly familiar with his reputation as are you? That’s why you asked the question. But those things are earned, those stripes are earned in settings like this.”
Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson, & Troy Fautanu
Coach Tomlin was asked about Calvin Austin not playing as a rookie who then cemented himself, how Roman Wilson and Troy Fautanu are trying to do that this year, and what he’s trying to instill in those guys while they’re sitting out.
“You know, the start doesn’t define the career. There’s been so many examples of it. You mentioned Calvin but also think about David DeCastro. There’s a lot of examples. Injuries are part of the game. Sometimes it derails the beginning of someone’s career, but if they’re professional and mentally tough, it just becomes a memory or an experience that they can grow from. So, it requires no significant talk or conversation. There’s just so many examples of it because this is a part of our game.”
Aaron Rodgers & DK Metcelf
Coach Tomlin was asked about his reaction to the Aaron Rogers to DK Metcalf quick out for a score in seven shots.
“That’s what I anticipate. You know, I’m not going to throw a pep rally. That’s what I expect. That’s what I envisioned all summer.”
T.J. Watt & Alex Highsmith
Coach Tomlin was asked if it was a concerted effort to swap T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith as much as they did today defensively.
“You know, that’s just part of team development. I don’t think it’s a big deal, to be quite honest with you. Make them work on both sides, give them an opportunity to work against other people. It’s just football this time of year.”
