3 players land on Steelers first injury report on Wednesday

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially started 2025 NFL season following an off day on Tuesday. As the Steelers took the practice field for their first official day of preparation for the New York Jets, there were X players who did not participate while X were limited. In the first injury report of the week courtesy of the Steelers PR Department, X names appear on the list.

Pittsburgh Steelers Participation/Injury Report, Week 1

Wednesday, September 3

No. 27 DB Cory Trice (Hamstring) – DNP **
No. 51 LB Nick Herbig (Hamstring) – Limited
No. 99 DT Derrick Harmon (Knee) – DNP

** In the designated 21-day window to return from Injured Reserve

On Tuesday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin ruled out rookie defensive lineman Derrick Harmon with his knee injury. As expected, Harmon did not participate in practice on Wednesday.

The only other player who Coach Tomlin named during his press conference whose status was up in the air was outside linebacker Nick Herbig who is dealing with a hamstring injury from the Steelers second preseason game. On Wednesday, Herbig was a limited participant which was a good sign of him going in the positive direction.

The only other player listed on the injured report was cornerback Cory Trice, who is on the Reserve/Injured List and designated to return. Exactly why he was listed is a mystery as he did not participate. Even though the Steelers gave him a designation of being in the 21 day window, this still would not get him through the mandatory games he must miss. At this time, this seems more of a “clerical error” that he is included.

What is also significant are the players who did not appear on the injury report at all. Even though Mike Tomlin said that everyone else appeared to be in line to play on Sunday, having no other names, such as Calvin Austin or Alex Highsmith, on the list is very encouraging.

As for the Jets injury report, it can be seen below courtesy of Steelers.com.

New York Jets Participation/Injury Report, Week 2

No. 2 QB Tyrod Taylor (Knee) – Limited
No. 75 G Alijah Vera-Tucker (Tricep) – DNP
No. 79 OL Chukwuma Okorfaor (Hand) – DNP

As is often the case when it comes to the injury report, it is the progression throughout the week that will give an indication to a player’s availability. For this reason, make sure you are checking back at Steel Curtain Network for Thursday’s and Friday’s injury report as well as continued coverage as the Steelers prepare for Sunday’s game against the Jets in New York.

I think having the outside LB group at 100% is key to maintaining Fields in the pocket. Just thankful Highsmith is good to go. I like this matchup. Always feels like the Steelers defense comes out of the gate super strong early in the season, minus the 49ers game. I’m almost tempted to predict their first shutout since the Rams in 2011, but that’s probably getting too ahead of myself considering the new look Jets offense and a new look Steelers defense. Not ideal that Harmon is out too.
