30 Scenarios in 30 Days: The Steelers will throw more INTs than last season

The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for the 2025 regular season, but before the real games begin, the team has to head to training camp back at Saint Vincent College in order to fine tune their skills. As we here at SCN prepare you for the start of camp, we give you a series called “30 Scenarios in 30 Days” which gives you a Steelers scenario every day leading up to the start of camp.

It is simple how it works. We provide you the scenario, reasons why it will or won’t happen, and then our prediction for what we think will take place.

Let’s get to the scenario…

Scenario: The Steelers will throw more INTs than last season (6)

Why it will happen: Last season, I fully expected the Steelers to throw more interceptions in 2024 than 2023. They were coming off only nine interceptions in 2023 which was only the third time the Steelers had single-digit interceptions in a season in franchise history, coming in as a three-way tie for the fewest with the years 2010 and 1994. But with the Steelers ultra-conservative approach on offense knowing that the defense was the strength of the team, the Steelers shattered their own interception record and only had six in 2024.

To repeat this number would seem to be unthinkable. The Steelers had never had fewer than nine interceptions in a season, and this includes now playing 17 games. Add to the fact that the Steelers have Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, a player who threw 11 interceptions last season, the chances of them having six or fewer is highly unlikely.

Why it won’t happen: To be honest, I didn’t think I’d be able to come up with any ways that the Steelers didn’t have an increase in interceptions in 2025. But then I started to look at other numbers. Although he had 11 interceptions in 2024 and 12 and his next to last full season in 2022, Aaron Rodgers has a lot of seasons with low interceptions. In fact, his average for a season is eight interceptions. But from 2017 through 2021, Rogers did not throw more than six interceptions in a season with his low coming in 2018 when he only had two. Yes, he is older, but Rogers has a history of not throwing the ball to his opponent.

Additionally, the Steelers franchise low in interceptions of six in 2024 only landed them in a three-way tie for third place in the NFL. The Los Angeles Chargers only had three interceptions and the Baltimore Ravens only had four. The Steelers ultimately tied with the Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles who each only had six interceptions. Notice that all five of these teams were ones who qualified for the postseason.

Taking these other factors into account, it’s not as unreasonable to think that the Steelers could have a repeat of six interceptions, or even fewer, in 2025.

Prediction: As much as I thought it was a no-brainer the Steelers would have more interceptions this coming season, I started to convince myself that it’s not as clear-cut as I thought. It would be a huge task to have their number be so low once again, but it’s not beyond the realm of possibilities. Still, although I don’t think they will have a sizable increase, I expect the Steelers to throw more than six interceptions this year.

If AARod throws 580+ passes, I’ll go with the over.

if you move the over under to say 10 or 11, I likely go under. Using 6 as the setting point, I would have to say over.
