6 players mentioned by Mike Tomlin following Monday’s practice

The Pittsburgh Steelers were on the practice field at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in Pittsburgh for practice on Monday. Following practice, head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media about their day on the field. Since he was asked about a number of players, I am excited to continue the players mentioned article at Steel Curtain Network for another week beyond training camp! Remember these are players where a specific question was asked during the Q&A.

Christian Kuntz & Chris Boswell

Coach Tomlin was asked if Christian Kuntz’s injury is more long term or short term.

“More short term.”

Coach Tomlin was asked about Chris Boswell just kicking off and not do the other stuff.

“Christian got hurt.”

Calvin Austin III & Ben Skowronek

Coach Tomlin was asked about how he feels about the depth at receiver right now with Calvin Austin III and Ben Skowronek out injured and if they might need to add a player there.

“I’m comfortable with it. Certainly, things get a little tight this time of year, lines get short, and usually in one area positionally. There’s strength and safety in numbers. So,as you mentioned, that’s a group that’s running a little light, but that’s just a component of this time of year.”

Beanie Bishop

Coach Tomlin was asked about Beanie Bishop saying there are a couple of guys in front of him that weren’t here last year, and what he has seen from Bishop this game along with what kind of role he could have with this team.

“I don’t worry about the Joneses, and neither should he. He should focus on improving, and he has done that. The growth between year one and year two. It is reasonable to expect individuals to grow, not only in terms of knowledge but skill relative to their positions. I like the trajectory of his progress in those areas.”

Kaleb Johnson

Coach Tomlin was asked what he wants to see out of Kaleb Johnson on Thursday.

“I just want to continue to see him get more comfortable in this environment. I think the more comfortable he gets, the less fuel he burns in anticipation, if you will, the more his talents are going to show. I think you saw it from game one to game two. It’s reasonable to expect that to continue.”

Coach Tomlin was asked about challenging Johnson a little bit last week for the game on Saturday and if that is something he is learning in how to manage the rookies.

“Certainly, it’s a bunch of individual relationships within this big organization, if you will. That started for me way back in in draft prep, to be quite honest with you. It is not only getting to know the players and their skill set, but their relationship with the game, how they best receive coaching, how they respond to challenges, etc. It’s a major component of the get to know for me.”
