A Letter From the Editor: When it comes to Aaron Rodgers, don’t believe all you read
The Aaron Rodgers and Pittsburgh Steelers dance is no longer just considered a dance, but a drama. In fact, some might even consider it a saga at this stage.
It has been since March when rumors and speculation began of Rodgers, who was released by the New York Jets, potentially joining the Steelers for the 2025 season. Since then we’ve had Rodgers sneak into the city to meet with the team’s brass, Rodgers hint in a public Q&A he will be joining the team, and Rodgers go on several podcasts talking about everything under the sun except the Steelers or football.
And here we are now in June with not even a hint of what might happen between the two parties as the Steelers press on throughout Phase III of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and prepare for Mandatory Minicamp.
Will Rodgers sign before Mandatory Minicamp? Some are speculating that might be the case, but the reality of the situation is no one genuinely knows what will happen.
This weekend I was able to speak with our source within the Steelers organization, and he talked about the Steelers approach to the Rodgers situation, and it might not be what you want and/or expect.
It also might be contrary to what you are reading and hearing on other outlets, especially the national media outlets.
According to our source, the Steelers are still patiently waiting for Rodgers to make up his mind as to whether he wants to play football in 2025. His desire to play doesn’t hinge on his health, mental status, or even his options at the moment. It hinges on those personal situations he spoke about on both the Pat McAfee and Joe Rogan shows/podcasts.
If those situations are remedied, there is a strong chance Rodgers will play in 2025. If those situations end as poorly as possible, Rodgers could just step away from the game.
However, if you are hearing the Steelers are frustrated with the situation, and don’t want any part of waiting past a specific deadline, that is false information.
There is no frustration on the Steelers end of this situation, and that’s even after there has been no guarantee from Rodgers on his potential arrival. Some are suggesting Rodgers has told them he doesn’t want to do the offseason workouts and is waiting to sign until they are over. While that could happen, that hasn’t been construed to the Steelers in any way. Some are suggesting Rodgers has told the Steelers he’ll be there, but just needs to take care of some personal things first. Rodgers hasn’t said anything of the sort.
The Steelers are patiently waiting, and at some point they could require an answer from Rodgers to be able to get acclimated and play, but that time isn’t now.
Rodgers and the Steelers have had nothing but positive interactions, and Rodgers stays in touch with Mike Tomlin on a regular basis. The Steelers are not in the dark with this situation. Is there an offer on the table? While the specifics of a potential deal weren’t made public, if Rodgers plays this season both parties have a good feel for what the other is expecting in terms of contract.
As I said earlier, for some this news is frustrating. It’s frustrating because they, the fans, are frustrated with a perceived lack of commitment on Rodgers’ part. Some are ticked off with the Steelers waiting around for the aging quarterback to make up his mind. Many, and this is a growing group, are starting to warm up to the thought of Mason Rudolph being the quarterback in 2025 and Will Howard backing him up.
While frustrating, these are the facts which were conveyed to me from our source. Do with it what you like, but if you hear anyone say or write the Steelers are reaching the end of their proverbial rope with this situation, they couldn’t be more wrong. In other words, if you were looking for the end of this tunnel, the Steelers seem willing to sit in the tunnel a little while longer…and they’re okay with that.
Count me as FIRMLY in this group. Still! I have been since MR re-signed with us.
RIGHT ON YINZER!
The narrative of Steelers’ frustration, or lack thereof, is without import, to me. The narrative of Steelers’ FO looking weak throughout this “saga”, is also without import, to me. This simply seems to be poor business decisions in multiple ways on the Steelers’ part. These decisions began well prior to 2018, and that, to me, is unfortunate to the point of tragedy.
I agree with Gillis in part that it’ll be good when the dog-and-pony show ends.
Seems I’ve failed to follow “Less is More”, again. Hypocriscy, am I right?
While I do believe there’s a gentleman’s agreement and the signing is just a formality at this point, I think the fanbase has gotten to the point where Hein… Acrisure Stadium’s foundation will begin to crack with the boos we’ll hear.
On a side note:
Jeff, based off what the source has told you, I assume that Kirk Cousins rumor is a myth?
Please, no Cousins!
If THAT happens, I will be genuinely and truly pissed!
Let’s all hope the glass (read Jeff below) leading to aquisition of Kirk Cousins remains unbroken. Bring in former Pro Bowler Tyler Huntley to back up Mason instead if glass breaks, and move on. Simple, honestly.
Re: Cousins…
The only thing I’ve ever heard mentioned about Cousins would be a “break glass in case of emergency” situation where Rodgers doesn’t play, and they don’t feel Rudolph could handle things.
There are so many moving parts to the Cousins situation, they are focused on Rodgers (way less complicated from a contractual standpoint) and those in-house.
If Captain Kirk is sitting on his couch a no strings attached free agent ready to play for 3M, and his highness doesn’t sign I’d be fine with the Steelers picking him up, but that is the only way. Absolutely zero chance I want to trade anything for him or have ANY ownership of that terrible contract.
Oops, again.
I’ll tell ya what folks do 2 things for me please? 1. Calm down and 2. Watch this: https://x.com/steelcitystar/status/1928602031855387110
Calm down and carry on, okey-dokey. BP meter seems to show I’m calm, box checked. Nice video. Dam Brady.
a true Pittsburgh Steelers fan, since the 70’s as a Steelers fan I’m happy with Mason Rudolph he doesn’t bring any drama because I’m getting tired of all the sports media groups and Steelers haters with their rat poison to stop talking about Aaron Rodgers will get the Steelers to the super bowl but Aaron Rodgers only cares about Aaron Rodger and I also don’t want Kirk Cousins I saw what damage Aaron Rodgers did to the New York Jets both Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins shuold go play up in the Canadian Football League furthermore also all the sports media groups and Steelers haters with tier rat poison said that Russell Wilson was going to take the Steelers to the super bowl what happen
Why the mystery? I get it he has friends going through stuff, and he has personal reasons, but you would think just for peace of mind for the rest of the team to show up, OR just give a hint that you are thinking about it! Now everyone is talking, which I believe he loves, and now what? Poor Mason is going to get yanked because MTs boy is ready, like they did Fields w/Russ, only to have MT turn on them in the end. Bradshaw, as brash as he was about it, is right. Just go tend to your business and quit stringing ppl along. This is a joke, and of course the spin is everyone is good w/him taking his time, uhh right. I know I wouldn’t be okay if I had the opportunity to to take the lead position at my job, only to be constantly worried (effecting my focus, and the chemistry around me) that an outsider (not signed yet) was possibly coming in and replacing me w/no questions asked. Freakin’ joke. MT time management blunder again, in stadium and out.
AARod clearly is enjoying himself, that’s the reason for the mystery. Narcissism.
Steelers are fortunate to have MR2 for multiple reasons. It’ll be nice to see him play again, if things shake out that way.
This is what he does. He is the preeminent hostage holder – no one does it better.
How can Aaron Rodgers’ lack of commitment possibly be perceived? How is it anything other than reality?
