Aaron Rodgers Pittsburgh Steelers contract and jersey number update

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers came to terms on a new contract Saturday, but there were a lot of unknown aspects of the deal which had the fan base curious about the minute details.

One of the many questions surrounding the signing of Rodgers was his jersey numbers. During Rodgers’ time with the Green Bay Packers he wore No. 12. However, when he signed with the New York Jets, he wore No. 8 as the Jets have the No. 12 retired after Joe Namath wore the number.

While the Steelers haven’t retired Terry Bradshaw’s No. 12, it is one of the many “unofficially retired” numbers which aren’t in circulation anymore. For all the fans who were concerned the team might break their unofficial standard, Rodgers won’t be wearing No. 12 in Pittsburgh.

He’ll be wearing No. 8.

If you’ve been keeping tabs on the Steelers roster, you’d know the No. 8 wasn’t available upon Rodgers signing. That number was being worn by punter Corliss Waitman. Whether Rodgers gave Waitman some money or not, the veteran punter is switching his number to No. 3 heading into minicamp next week.

Maybe the most important part of the one-year deal with the Steelers are the financial details. While nothing is official yet, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting some sourced details. You can see those below:

Lastly, the Steelers media, and by proxy the fan base, will get other answers from Rodgers himself as he will address the media Tuesday afternoon after the team’s first minicamp practice. This per Burt Lauten, Steelers Public Relations Director.

Poor Waitman, one bad punt in snowy Cleveland in 65 total, and loses his number. Didn’t know Corliss was older (29), he did well in his jobs. AARod could also have donated to a charity of Waitman’s choice, too, I suppose.

“Poorliss Waitman”

Maybe he preferred 3? Looking at pictures of him on Skynet he’s had many different numbers. Maybe he doesn’t care what the number is as long as his names on the jersey? I like Waitman, hope he has a great camp.

My goodness, your Skynet is STRONG! I am not worthy…oh, now I see. Handsome punting form. My Skynet is not strong, or I’m simply lazy.
