Art Rooney admits the Steelers will have a new helmet and throwback in 2025

Recently a rumor swirled around social media of the Steelers potentially getting a new helmet in 2025. These rumors were mostly shot down by those who are supposedly “in the know”, but when team president Art Rooney II was meeting with the Steelers official website after the regular season schedule was released he admitted those rumors were actually true.

For all 32 teams, an annual highlight for many has to do with the schedule for throwbacks and color rush uniforms, and, as was reported weeks ago, in 2025 the NFL is also allowing teams to wear an alternate helmet. Rooney outlined those plans for the coming season.

“We are going to have a new throwback uniform this year, and with a new helmet to go with it,” said Rooney. “We’re planning to wear our new throwbacks for the Packers game on Sunday night, Oct. 26. It’ll be fun to wear our throwbacks against one of the older franchises in the league – that just seems to be appropriate. We’ll be doing our color rush uniforms late in the year. I think we’re going to do it for the Monday night game on Dec. 15 against the Miami Dolphins.”

What will the throwbacks be? Will it be a trip back to the “Batman” uniforms? Or will it just be the block numbers and block name plates which have been used recently to honor those legendary 1970s teams who brought a Super Bowl back to the city of Pittsburgh.

Either way, if you are someone who loves new uniform and helmet combinations, it looks as if the Steelers will be getting some new threads and lids this season!

For the love of the gods, can they please do the Batmans? Even if just for a year?

Many fans (including myself) have been chomping at the bit to see those beauties on the field for quite some time now. I, and my wallet, are ready for it.

Was cool watching Andy Russell and Roy Jefferson in those jerseys–at home.

Can you clarify what is a “Batman” helmet?

Batman jersey, not helmet. You can Google for images of Steelers from ’66-’67. Helmets were similar to last season’s 70’s throwbacks w/gray masks. Block jersey numerals.

Got to admit, I don’t love the Batman. But a return to the grey facemasks would be both low-key and awesome.
Hearken back to an era that was our most successful, not our years of futility.

ARII said the “new throwbacks” are to be unveiled in July, he didn’t specify a date, though. Will break up the drudge of training camp.

Actually own a TJ Watt Batman jersey. They are called that because they are black long sleeve jerseys with a yellow color that looks like a cape front and back. The white ones are pretty awesome too. I would love to see them go to it. As far as the helmets go, I would love to see them go with a white helmet. But then that would not be a throwback.

Problem with the white batman jerseys was how they looked on B&W TV sets at that time. Kind of washed out the yellow.
