Beanie Bishop doing everything he can to help the Steelers in 2025

When it comes to a player’s approach to the upcoming season, there is a strong chance they have a good feeling about their spot on the current roster. For some, their spot is safe and secure. For others, nothing is guaranteed.

When you think about second year defensive back Beanie Bishop, he would fall into the latter category. Even though Bishop made some splash plays last season, most notably his two interceptions of Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, the Steelers have made moves to add depth in the secondary.

The Steelers brought in Brandin Echols as a free agent, drafted Donte Kent in the 7th Round, and even brought in Sebastian Castro as an undrafted rookie free agent (UDFA) to compete in the defensive secondary one way or another. For Bishop, an undrafted player out of West Virginia in 2024, he doesn’t care about anyone being brought in. He views it as his job, and his job to lose.

“It’s my spot right now, but you’ve got to always work and keep that competitive edge to remain with the one team,” said Bishop. “I wasn’t drafted at all. So, who knows. We’re still in the offseason. They still could bring a guy in. But I always have that fire underneath me.”

Bishop realizes the threat to his job, and he wisely wasn’t leaving any stone unturned this offseason to get himself ready for the upcoming season. Outside of his training regimen, Bishop has decided to take a look at his diet to see if he can improve his game in that regard. Some might scoff at the idea of altering someone’s eating habits having an impact on their performance, but as I stated earlier, Bishop is leaving no stone unturned to make himself better.

“I lost a lot of fat, just changing my diet,” said Bishop. “It was a long process too. Especially with my baking stuff. Guys were asking how do you do that with the baking? I was bringing a lot of the sweets here, cutting back on fried foods and making a lot of stuff myself. I was meal-prepping a lot. I got a smart scale at home. I even got in a routine of a breakfast that I eat every morning, just trying make sure that the calorie intake and stuff stays the same.

“Right now, since we’re training more and started OTAs, the calorie intake goes up a little bit.”

Say what you want about Bishop as a player, and about the competition coming up for the slot cornerback/nickel cornerback position, but he is doing whatever he can to put his best foot forward. Steelers fans tend to love an underdog story, and in this instance Bishop would be someone worth rooting for throughout his career.
