Cordarrelle Patterson breaks news of him being released by the Steelers
The NFL can be a harsh business at times, and that is certainly the case when you were given a spot on the 90-man offseason roster, only to find out that spot is now gone.
This is what happened to veteran return man Cordarrelle Patterson, who announced on his personal Twitter/X account he was informed Monday, the Steelers day off, he was being released from the team.
This per Patterson himself:
Breaking news❗️❗️❗️Pittsburgh Steelers release old washed up cordarrelle patterson on his day off!!!

This move didn’t shock anyone not named Cordarrelle Patterson, as it seemed the team was preparing for life without the veteran return man since last season ended. They brought in Kenneth Gainwell as a free agent to help with back-up running back duties, they drafted Donte Kent in the 7th Round of the 2025 NFL Draft who has experience returning kicks, and the team even signed Trey Sermon after Rookie Minicamp as another veteran option carrying the football.
It just seemed the writing was on the wall for Patterson this entire offseason, and why the Steelers waited until a week into training camp to make the move certainly will raise some eyebrows. Nonetheless, this means there will likely be some other roster moves made when the Steelers make these transactions official, and who else might be coming and going will be interesting to see.
The 90-man offseason roster is fluid, so be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of training camp, mainly the first padded practice tomorrow, Tuesday, at Saint Vincent College.
My guess is the official announcement from the team will coincide with an announcement of another wigning
Cordarelle wasn’t necessarily just camp fodder, but he was looking at an uphill battle. So, when either need at another position or an unexpected opportunity to sign a player they’ve had their eye on came up, the team decided to cut him loose to seek opportunity elsewhere. Better for such a vet that the cut comes now and not the end of camp.
Anyway, thanks for your efforts, Cordarelle, and best of luck in your future.
Pretty unique career. WR to RB, all time kick returns for TD leader and a Super Bowl champion. Idk if this is the end, but it’s been a great ride for him regardless. You could debate he’s a hall of famer
You always feel for guys that get released. I would have hoped that Patterson knew what was coming and could have handled it in a more professional manner.
It was going to be an uphill battle for him to make the team. Four practices in and he still wasn’t participating. He was no longer worth the roster spot, let alone the salary.
Swing Tackle, Wide Receiver 2. Roster opening.
I like CP, but if he was truly surprised by this move he must not have watched game film of last season.
