Expectations Of Will Howard
Some Steelers fans want to label every quarterback drafted as either the next Big Ben or a total bust. But with Will Howard, it doesn’t have to be that extreme. Two things can be true: you can love the pick and still admit he’s probably not the long-term answer under center. And that’s perfectly fine.
Let’s look at what we should assume. The Steelers brought in Will Howard as a developmental guy — someone with legit size (he’s about 6’5″, 235), a big arm, and the mobility to break off 60-yard runs when the defense sleeps on him. He’s experienced, smart, and confident. He even helped lead Ohio State to a national title. Getting that kind of player in the sixth round? That’s a win.
But… he’s not the guy. At least not right now — and maybe not ever. And again, that’s okay.
The Steelers aren’t handing him the keys to the offense. Everything the front office has done this offseason suggests they’re gearing up for a real QB move in 2026. They’ve been stacking draft picks, and next year’s quarterback class is considered a lot stronger. If you’re reading between the lines, it sure looks like Pittsburgh is planning to take a big swing then. I don’t want to look too far into the future but it would be ELECTRIC of the Steelers pick their next franchise QB while the draft is in Pittsburgh.
That doesn’t mean Howard’s just a camp arm. Backup quarterback is one of the most important roles in the NFL. Just ask any team that loses their starter midseason. Howard has a chance to learn, grow, and be ready when his number is called. If he turns into more than that? Even better. But there’s no pressure for him to carry the franchise right now.
And let’s not overlook what kind of teammate this guy is. Howard was the leader of the offense at Ohio State — not just the quarterback, but the one guys looked to when things got tough. He’s tough, passionate, and clearly loves football. He plays with heart, and he’s not afraid to throw a block, take a hit, or do the little things that don’t show up in the box score.
That kind of mentality fits perfectly with what the Steelers are building. He can command a huddle, earn the respect of a locker room, and lay it all on the line for his team. He might not be the franchise QB, but he’s absolutely the kind of player you want in your building.
So let’s chill with the extremes. Will Howard doesn’t have to be Ben Roethlisberger 2.0 to be a valuable piece of this team. He’s a smart pick with upside, and he gives Pittsburgh flexibility at a key position.
Sometimes it’s not about finding the next face of the franchise. Sometimes it’s just about making smart football decisions — and that’s exactly what the Steelers did.

Stay Blessed and Stay Positive… “Here We Go”
a true Pittsburgh steelers fan, since 70’s all Will Howard has to do is set and learn while Mason Rudolph is the Steelers starting quarterback this how Will Howard in many ways he will develop
Right on the nose. I expect the Steelers to try to draft their next franchise QB in 2026.
Performances will dictate the exact direction, but I’d guess they hope to be able to judge by then whether they’re better off projecting Will Howard as the next Mason Rudolph or trying to retain Mason to be the next Charlie Batch; Mason’s signed for two years, so maybe they’ll both be here for a couple of seasons. In either case, you’re right, it’s a very important position and a pretty nice gig for whoever gets it.
I have to agree with Big Ben, being a 6th round pick QB means you have no pressure on you. Go in and work, learn, support the starting QB, prepare as if you are going to start and when you get your chances in practice and preseason just show them what you can do. If that goes well, you get more chances.
