Max Hurleman Has a Day Against the Jaguars
The Steelers had their preseason debut this past weekend. While many folks have minimal excitement about preseason games, they are incredibly important for roster hopefuls trying to find a home in the NFL. One such pro football hopeful who played a great game against Jacksonville was undrafted rookie Max Hurleman.
In his first outing, Hurleman secured two catches from QB Skylar Thompson for 29 yards and a touchdown during the Steelers’ final drive of the first half. He capped if off with an impressive backflip celebration. Hurleman also saw some time on special teams. He really showed some flashes to the Steelers’ coaching staff. He took advantage of his opportunity in this game, and while the Steelers have a crowded RB room right now, he just might make this roster. It would be difficult to let him walk if he continues to rise to the challenge through the rest of the preseason.
With that being said, this begs the question: who is Max Hurleman? A PA native, Hurleman attended Wyomissing Area High School, where he lettered in football all 4 years. The young man served as a team captain his senior year, and he received honors for his play both as a running back and as a defensive back.
Continuing on to his collegiate career, Max Hurleman began at Colgate University as a member of the Raiders. There, he played for 4 seasons. At Colgate, he was used on offense as a running back and on special teams as a KR/PR. He made his presence felt in both the running game and passing game, as well as special teams. His sophomore season, as a running back, he was the team’s second-leading receiver. Hurleman was named 2023 All-Patriot League First Team special teams as a senior. Following his 4 seasons at Colgate, Hurleman transferred to Notre Dame for just one season. As a member of the Fighting Irish, Hurleman was utilized as a defensive back and a punt returner. He averaged 6.0 yards per return that season, and he compiled a total of 13 tackles with one fumble recovery on defense.
Hurleman’s versatility is on full display looking back at his high school and collegiate careers. He reminds me a bit of Julian Edelman in the way he can be used in so many different situations. He gives me the impression of being an all-around good football player that may be able to find a home with the right squad. It’s always a long shot as an undrafted rookie, but I am rooting for the guy to continue to play well. Should he find his way on to the Steelers roster, he could be a valuable utility man.
After watching Max excel at Colgate, him making plays is no surprise! Rather than folks saying “he would be good for the practice squad”, the narrative should be “we should find a place on the 53 man roster for him!” Granted, this was just one pre-season game, but it’s obvious he’s a versatile playmaker!
Preacher boy Roy was saying he reminds him of Julian Edelman. I can see it. I obviously were gonna temper our expectations, but you never know
