Steelers add safety Chuck Clark to the 90-man roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers made it through only one day of practice at 2025 training camp before making their first of what is likely to be several roster moves throughout the preseason. On Friday, the Steelers announced they added safety Chuck Clark to the roster.

Drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL draft, Clark played six seasons in Baltimore before missing 2023 due to a torn ACL. Appearing an all but one game in his first two seasons, Clark only had two starts in those two years before finding a more full-time role in 2019 where he started 12 of 16 games. In his final three seasons in Baltimore, Clark started every game at safety. In his six seasons in Baltimore, Clark had 63 starts with five interceptions as one was returned for a touchdown along with 32 passes defensed.

After being traded to the Jets in 2023 for a seventh-round draft pick in 2024, Clark missed his first year in New York due to his ACL injury sustained during OTA’s. In 2024, Clark signed back with the Jets on a one-year deal. Clark won the starting strong safety job and played every defensive snap until he injured his ankle in Week 6 and was placed on the Reserve/Injured List (IR). Clark returned after four games and started the remaining six games until being placed on IR again at the end of the season with an undisclosed injury. In his one season in New York, Clark had a forced fumble and two passes defensed.

Clark joins a Steeler safety room that seemed lacking after the trade of Minkah Fitzpatrick. With some uncertainty as to exactly where Jalen Ramsey will settle in throughout the Steelers secondary, there is room at safety for Clark to fit in and make the 53-man roster.

In the corresponding move, the Steelers released defensive tackle Dominique Davis.

Good run defender, would have rathered Whitehead. Clark has played both safety positions, I still prefer Whitehead.

Guess the weather’s too nice to hash out Clark. I do prefer Clark to Marcus Williams. Blackmon got a nice deal from the Saints. Always part of the story remains unknown.

If he somehow manages to stay healthy, he could be a solid depth piece. It may not be earth shattering or jaw dropping, but I’m alright with this move.

Another option. Just me speculating: they want Jalen to play a bigger part of the deep secondary with so much depth at corner. Trice, Bishop, Kent, Pierre, Echols are all guys who I would have a tough time cutting . If one of the corners don’t step up, maybe Sebastian Castro does, and if not, chuck clark is a veteran so they can see what he’s got left. Hopefully he can stay on the field

It really comes down to do you want Castro/Clark at safety or do you want Echols, Bishop, Kent, or Trice (Pierre I want strictly for special teams) as slot/outside. Jalen Ramsey will be on the field. When in the dime, it’s 100% gonna be Elliott, Thornhill, Porter, Ramsey, and Slay. It’s just a matter of where Ramsey is that determines who that 6th DB is. Clark gives them a veteran option, as opposed to leaving yourself with an undrafted rookie as the only option if you don’t feel great about one of your corners playing safety.

Clark seemed like a really good guy here in Baltimore. He gave a lot of his time to causes in the area, and seems like a very smart guy in interviews. I like him, and applaud the signing of Chuck Clark the man, but boy the player sure has the look of a guy who’s brain says go, but his body says uh, no. I think he’ll make a good coach if he chooses to do that, but if he’s gonna be relied on in any significant way I’m scared.

Just keep churning the roster to get incrementally better.
