Steelers Book Review: “Behind the Yoi” hits all the right notes

This time of year the most die hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan can get bored. Sure, there are the day-to-day news stories to track, but sometimes the black-and-gold mind needs more to get them through the final stretch until training camp starts. What better way to fill that time than with a Steelers book.

I often get asked for suggestions for Pittsburgh Steelers books, and I like to write up articles on ones I read which might be of interest to the fan base.

The most recent selection was actually released in 2024, but I waited to review it until I actually, you know, read the book. Compared to other outlets who read blurbs, I want to have a real feel for the book before I would ever recommend it to any Steelers fan. The book I’m referring to is a biography on the legendary Myron Cope called “Behind the Yoi: The Life of Myron Cope, Legendary Pittsburgh Steelers Broadcaster” written by Dan Joseph and Elizabeth Cope. Yes, Myron’s daughter helped co-write the book.

The book is a tremendous reflection of Cope’s time getting into the business, writing, taking to the air waves, creating the Terrible Towel, his family life and so much more.

If you don’t know anything about the legendary Myron Cope, you’ll learn so much about a mainstay in not just Steelers history, but Pittsburgh sports history.

If you are someone who grew up with Cope’s voice being a soundtrack to your Steelers life, even you will enjoy this book and learn so much about the man behind the yoi.

I was fortunate to interview both Dan and Elizabeth on my Monday “Let’s Ride” podcast this past week, and it was a great interview on what went into creating this book.
