Steelers Burning Question: Does OTAs attendance matter?
Last season I did the Friday Night Steelers Six Pack and wondered if it was worth doing further. After all, interaction was not great, and sometimes you just have to adjust. So I decided to call an audible, and not just abandon the Friday night meeting of the black-and-gold minds.
Instead of six questions, I wanted to focus solely on one question.
We’ll still do the preamble of what you’re eating/drinking/listening to, but we’ll focus our attention on the one Steelers question of the week. Don’t worry, most weeks I’ll do a bonus/extra credit question for fun. With all that out of the way, let’s get to the question!
Organized Team Activities (OTAs) are a great way to get some football injected back into our veins, but the one question I always have during these days is, “Does attendance matter?”
As you probably know, T.J. Watt and DK Metcalf missed the first week of OTAs, but does it matter?
These workouts are voluntary, but does the absence of two of the biggest names on the roster impact the team? While the coach in my says it absolutely does, but the reality is it likely doesn’t mean much.
I feel this is the first stage of team building, and while T.J. Watt is a proven veteran with the team, the same can’t be said for Metcalf. Metcalf is still getting acclimated to his new digs, and, if I’m being honest, Watt has to get comfortable with his new teammates on the defensive side of the ball.
I say it bothers me, but if Metcalf and Watt were to show up next week, I’d celebrate their attendance and consider it water under the bridge.
What say you?
As for what I’m eating, this week was my wife’s birthday, so we’re going out to eat on the rare occasion without children. As for drink, it’s going to be lemon water and whatever whacky music is playing at the restaurant!
Happy Friday everyone!!
Ugh, well, my response is that “it depends” on the experience level of the player, with a nod to familiarity of that player with their team’s system. Of course, management will tolerate what they will, Noll had zero tolerance, Tomlin has greater tolerance–yes different eras, apples and oranges.
When does Mandatory Minicamp start?! Can’t wait.
Too bad for parts of the 2011 CBA.
I believe mandatory mini-camp is the week of June 8th. I think so anyway. Or maybe there is a week between next week’s week #2 of OTAs and the mandatory? Either way, it’s close upon the heels of the voluntary stuff and then 5-6 weeks off until training camp.
My thanks, SY.
Modello and Ploughsman board earlier at English pub
Im ok with experienced Steelers missing. Would prefer Metcaf being there to acclimate himself with the team but I’m only a fan so it doesn’t matter in the long run.
Sounds delicious, and beats my stuffed baked salmon and broccoli w/unsweetened iced tea. Maybe some pineapple upside-down cake, later. Forgot this part above. No music, mourning water loss.
Local brewery in Smithfield had pineapple upside down cake as on of there deserts today. Was delicious
Local daughter baked mine. I’m lucky, sometimes.

Jack Lambert was an excellent football player whose career’s end was hastened by injury.
That was a fun little trip down memory lane. The Mark Malone years, wow.
Miracle Malone, Louis Lipps, Mike Merriwether, Donnie Shell…Marino ruined a Giants’-style run to the SB. It may have ended up more like the ’85 Patriots for Pgh.
Enjoyed that trip back to 1984.
Ate a ham egg, and cheese sandwich with peppers and onion, and salsa.
Drinking Lagunitas Beast of Both Worlds IPA, and listening to Prince’s masterpiece “Purple Rain” album while I install some down lighting in my basement. If I get through that I’ll switch on my Pink Floyd channel on Pandora.
Does OTA’S attendance matter? Depends on who you are and how many new teammates, and or coaches you have. New players? 100%must. Every season is different, for example does TJ Watt need to be here? No. Only new piece for him is Jack Sawyer. I’d love it if he were here but he has a contract dispute, and I get that. How about Cam Heyward? I think he needs to be there, and I love that he is! His running mate is young, and there two rookies, and a lot of new faces in that room. Good on you captain Cam. QB’s should always be there. Does Boswell need to be there nah. How about the DB’s? New coach, and teammates, absolutely. Etc., etc. So it’s not a simple yes or no answer. I’d be there.
Great response which closely mirrors my own JoeBwan!
Great minds think alike?
Back to my normal Friday evening watering hole and back to my normal Sun King GFJ IPA. Although it is Saturday morning as I type this, that all is true. What was also true was that dinner was whatever I could grub out of the refrigerator. I ate pretty well earlier in the day, so food was (mostly) optional last evening!
As far as attendance at OTAs, my personal opinion and desire was that everyone would be there. I mean I used to dislike the fact that Troy was (almost) never there. But, I understand why the more seasoned guys might prefer to continue to work out on their own. I just prefer they do so with the remainder of the team. So, instead of being disappointed with who is missing, I choose to celebrate those vets that ARE there! I do think the vets that have a lot of new and/or young guys in their room should be there to help the acclimation process though. I think that would be extremely beneficial to them, their new teammates and to the team as a whole. But, all is good. They’ll get it all figured out.
When we get older we realize life is all about perspective SY! When I got moved to salary years ago I was a little pissed that I wasn’t getting paid for OT anymore, but then I chose a different perspective and focused on the fact that I now get paid 24 / 7. I know, I know, I still don’t get OT, but having a different perspective has kept me sane and off the ledge.
Absolutely, positively true my friend! Perspective is everything!
I was always salary. Until I retired. Then I have done real estate (very part-time ish) for the past eight years. That is 100% commission based so it helped me realize how absolutely THRILLED I was to be salaried for those previous 34 years (when we were starting out and raising our family)! Of course, by the time I did RE, money wasn’t really a humongous concern — at least the money to keep a roof over my head and food on the table type money. 🙂
I was in boat w/JoeB. OT was nice, and salaried nice in its own way. Remember working > 8 hours/day lots while salaried, but never felt bad about it.
