Steelers give safety DeShon Elliott a two-year extension

The Pittsburgh Steelers are sitting on some salary cap space after they completed their Mandatory Minicamp last week, and they wanted to spend some money before the team reports to training camp in July.

No, it isn’t a mega deal for T.J. Watt, but a two-year contract extension for safety DeShon Elliott.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the deal is a $12.5 million dollar extension with $9.21 million in guarantees.

Prior to the 2024 season, Elliott’s first in Pittsburgh, the safety signed a two-year contract. His season last year did more than convince the team they should extend him this year. Before the new deal, Elliott was slated to be paid $3 million this season and had a $3.75 million cap hit, but will cost more on the 2025 books based on the guarantees and how Omar Khan and company structure his contract.

Last season Elliott played in 15 games with the following statistics:

  • Combined Tackles: 108
  • TFL: 4
  • INT: 1
  • Fumble Recoveries: 3
  • Forced Fumbles: 2
  • Pass Defenses: 6
  • QB Hits: 2.5

Elliott his career numbers in several statistical categories in 2024, but he also helped transform the Steelers secondary with his passion and energy. Will he be able to pick up where he left off? The Steelers are banking on it, and it begs the question which player will get a new contract next.

Will it be T.J. Watt, or someone like Elliott, who most would view them as a surprise?

Glad to keep him around.
Take care of these types of deals while still hammering out a new deal for TJ. The more clear the overall financial picture. the better Omar & company can figure out a deal that works for both the team and TJ.
