Steelers make several roster moves after rookie minicamp

The Pittsburgh Steelers concluded their 2025 Rookie Minicamp this past weekend, and those who are in attendance are not just those who were drafted or signed as an undrafted free agent. There are often cases of veterans getting another shot at making a roster, and other rookie camp invites who get a chance to prove they are capable of playing in the NFL.

Almost every year after the conclusion of minicamp the Steelers announce the signing of players to their 90-man roster. Sometimes, but not all the time, players also need to be released to make room on the offseason roster. Monday the Steelers announced the signing of three players, and the release of another.

In are the following:

RB Trey Sermon

RB Max Hurleman

OL Gareth Warren

And out is:

RB Aaron Shampklin

For more information on the newly acquired players, this is from the Steelers official website:

Hurleman appeared in 51 games in five college seasons, starting 23. He had 194 carries for 814 yards and one touchdown. He also is hailed for his punt return ability, returning 49 punts for 353 yards, a 7.2-yard average.

Hurleman spent his first four seasons at Colgate University before transferring to Notre Dame in 2024 where he played mainly on special teams.

Sermon brings NFL experience with him as he has appeared in 42 games, starting five, over four seasons. He carried the ball 134 times for 505 yards and three touchdowns.

He spent the last two years with the Indianapolis Colts, appearing in 31 games, with three starts. He had 91 carries for 319 yards and two touchdowns. He spent the 2022 season with the Philadelphia Eagles and 2021 with the San Francisco 49ers.

Warren played at Lindenwood University where he appeared in 35 games over four seasons. In 2023 he was part of an offensive line that helped the ground game produce 134.7 yards per game, which was fourth best in the Ohio Valley Conference.
