Steelers OTAs: Three Undrafted Free Agents to Watch Closely
As the Pittsburgh Steelers begin organized team activities (OTAs), the spotlight naturally falls on big-name free agents, high draft picks, and this year, a certain quarterback who may or may not arrive. But if there is one thing Steelers fans know, it is that undrafted players can absolutely carve out impactful careers in the black and gold. From James Harrison to Jaylen Warren, and most recently Beanie Bishop, the team has a rich history of developing overlooked talent. This year, three undrafted free agents — Roc Taylor, Sebastian Castro, and DJ Thomas-Jones — are on my radar as serious contenders to make the 53-man roster.
Roc Taylor, WR, UAB
Standing at 6’2″ and weighing over 210 pounds, Roc Taylor brings size, strength, and a physical style to the wide receiver room. What makes Taylor intriguing is his big frame and his ability to fight through contact and make contested catches, something the Steelers receiving corps currently lacks. With George Pickens traded and depth roles up for grabs behind DK Metcalf, Taylor has a path. If he can show consistency in route running and contribute on special teams, his chances of sticking on the roster skyrocket.
Sebastian Castro, DB, Iowa
Castro is a versatile, high-IQ defender who fits the mold of a classic Steelers defensive back. He played the “cash” position at Iowa, a hybrid role combining slot corner and safety responsibilities. That kind of flexibility is valuable in today’s NFL, especially for a Pittsburgh defense that values matchup-specific packages. With a motor that never quits and an aggressive tackling style, Castro has a real shot to make noise in a crowded but unproven defensive backfield, especially in the slot position. His ability to contribute on special teams could be the key to locking down a spot.
DJ Thomas-Jones, TE/FB, South Alabama
Mr. “1st Team All Violence” — I love that title. Thomas-Jones may not be a household name, but his athleticism and raw ability pop off the screen. The Steelers are still working to find a fullback-type player Arthur Smith would like to utilize, and DJ brings a combination of versatility and physicality that could earn him reps. Much like Terrance Garvin in the early 2010s, Thomas-Jones could be a surprise special teams ace who earns his way onto the field through sheer hustle and physical play.
The Steelers’ reputation for developing undrafted players is not just folklore, it is part of the organization’s identity. Each year, someone comes out of nowhere to make the team, and sometimes, make a difference. As OTAs ramp up, do not be surprised if Roc Taylor, Sebastian Castro, or DJ Thomas-Jones are the next names added to that proud tradition.
Steelers fans should keep a close eye on these three. Not only do they bring upside, but they, among others, embody the gritty, underdog mentality Pittsburgh has always embraced. And in the Steel City, that might be the most important trait of all.
a true Pittsburgh Steelers fan, since the 70’s I hope the players on this list get a chance to play this season because with the preseason is too short it’s hard for the undrafted free agents to get in a game to show what can do that’s why I said the N.F.L. shuold use the U.F.L. to have the teams undrafted free agents play ten games to have more than enough film to show and develop the players skills
