Steelers Practice Tracker: Tracking the news from the joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Pittsburgh Steelers are back in Pittsburgh following training camp and are at Acrisure Stadium for a joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although the practice was closed to the public, it was open to media and it was expected there would be reports as to what was going on just like last season…
But that ended up not being the case.
Steelers' joint practice with the Bucs will get underway momentarily.
Updates from the practice will be sparing because we're under regular-season reporting guidelines, which means no observations from practice unless confirmed by coach or player afterward.

For that reason, all we can do this time is compile all the information that comes out after practice has concluded.
Enjoy the news coming from practice, and be sure to stay tuned to Steel Curtain Network as we deliver the best, in-depth news surrounding the black-and-gold as the team prepares for the 2025 regular season.
Note: Newer tweets will be added at the bottom to give a better timeline for when viewing at a later date.

Steelers and Bucs joint practice finished off with a two-minute drill where the Steelers offense didn’t pick up a first down, Pat Freiermuth confirmed. DK Metcalf dropped a pass on second down, but the overall sentiment was they needed to clean a bunch of stuff up.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) August 14, 2025
Pat Freiermuth said the offense dominated Seven Shots, 6-1. But in the two-minute drill, they failed to record a first down. Mixed bag for the first-team offense.

DeShon Elliott on Mike Tomlin's decision to sit out most of the starters again in Preseason Week 2: “We definitely want to play. But shit, he has a (plan) for us. We gonna do our job and he’s gonna do his job.’

Steelers OL and RBs after practice commonly said they would like to have seen the run game have more success.
Frazier said the Bucs sent lots of blitzes and that threw a wrench in some things there.

#Steelers CB Joey Porter Jr. was limited in practice today. They moved Jalen Ramsey outside and played Brandin Echols in the slot, Echols said. Got lots of run in that alignment in a very competitive (and talky) 2-min drill that Tampa won.
"We'll see them Saturday."

Two fun matchups here:

One player who multiple players named that stood out today — WR Scotty Miller.
He’s someone who Andy Weidl praised in his pre-practice presser as well. Feels like miller has done enough to earn himself a roster spot at the moment.

Christian Kuntz very happy jumping in the fight on special teams. But P Cam Johnston had to be pulled off a guy by fellow punter Corliss Waitman
— Mark Kaboly (@MarkKaboly) August 14, 2025
The one big dust-up at practice today was started by … Steelers punter Cam Johnston.
He’s a punter. But he also an Aussie first and foremost.
He took exception to someone crashing too close to his plant leg.
Connor Heyward then clobbered someone and things escalated.

Choose your Steelers duo:
• Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Tomlin
• Joey Porter Sr. and Cam Heyward
• Chris Boswell and Ben Sauls

Bucs WR Emeka Egbuka said the Steelers ran a lot of zone coverage today against them, not as much man to man.
Called facing Jalen Ramsey ‘surreal.’
Egbuka confirmed the Bucs offense were successful on their two minute drive, with Baker Mayfield finding Evans against Ramsey.

The seven shots periods today went as follows:
Steelers offense over Bucs defense 6-1 (via Pat Freiermuth)
Bucs offense over Steelers defense 4-3 (via Emeka Egbuka)

One quote that stood out to me was this from Brandin Echols, and I think it describes a good bit of what I saw out there today.
"We came out a little flat. Flatter than usual."
