Steelers release Robert Woods from the practice squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers had an off day from practice on Tuesday before returning for their official weekly schedule of preparation for the New York Jets this Sunday in Week 1. As a part of the ever-changing roster, particularly with the practice squad, the Steelers have announced they have released wide receiver Robert Woods.

Failing to secure a spot on the Steelers 53-man roster last Tuesday when final cut downs occurred to get from 90 players to 53, Woods was announced on Wednesday afternoon as one of the 16 players the Steelers signed to the practice squad. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Woods was not satisfied with being on the practice squad and asked for his release.

So why did Woods initially sign to the practice squad only to have a change of heart? Perhaps his willingness to go on the practice squad had to do with the health of others at the wide receiver position. Both Calvin Austin and Ben Skowronek missed time in the preseason due to injury, and if either were to miss Week 1 Woods would Have been in line to be the likely call up. But in Tuesday’s press conference, Coach Tomlin only listed Derrick Harmon as being out at Nick Herbig as being questionable for Sunday’s game against the Jets.

There is still more to go with the Steelers practice squad. Because of the inclusion of Julius Welschof, a player who is eligible for the International Player Pathway program, the Steelers are allowed a 17th player on the squad. Last week it was reported that offensive lineman Aiden Williams would be filling out the 17th position, although the Steelers have yet to make an official announcement or have Williams on the practice squad at Steelers.com. Additionally, it has been reported this week that linebacker Jon Rhattigan was set to sign with the Steelers practice squad as well.

However the 16th and 17th positions on the practice squad end up for the time being, make sure to stay tuned to Steel Curtain Network for continued coverage as the Steelers prepare to travel to face the New York Jets this Sunday at 1 PM.
