Steelers sign running back Jaylen Warren to a two-year extension

As the Pittsburgh Steelers are now in their week of preparation heading into Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season. With the Steelers not taking the field yet for their first official game, there is still time for any kind of player contract issues to be resolved before the team leaves on Saturday for New York to face the Jets. On Monday, it was announced by his agent that Steelers running back in Jaylen Warren has agreed to a two-year contract extension.

Warren was given a one-year tender as a restricted free agent this past offseason which was set to pay him $5.346 million this season. Instead, Warren is now under contract for the next three seasons. The financials of the deal have yet to be announced.

UPDATE: The overall contract total has been reported as almost $17.5 million for 3 years.

Undrafted out of Oklahoma State in 2002, Warren made the Steelers 53-man roster and appeared in 16 games his rookie season with 379 rushing yards on 77 attempts with one rushing touchdown along with 28 receptions on 33 targets for 214 receiving yards. In 2023, Warren appeared in all 17 games and had his most productive season where he had 784 rushing yards on 149 attempts and four rushing touchdowns with 61 receptions on 74 targets for 370 receiving yards. Last season, Warren rushed for 511 yards on 120 attempts and one touchdown in 15 regular season games along with 38 receptions on 47 targets and 310 receiving yards.

In three years with the Steelers, Warren has never started a game as he has been the second option behind the always available Najee Harris. After Harris signed with the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason, Warren is expected to take over the starting role, at least for now. The Steelers also signed free agent running back Kenneth Gainwell from the Philadelphia Eagles and drafted running back to Kaleb Johnson in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft.

Stay tuned to Steel Curtain Network for all your Steelers news as they prepare to face the New York Jets this Sunday at 1 PM in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season.

Crazy to think that he’s the first RB since Willy Parker to get an extension.

Glad he’ll be staying! I just hope he’ll be able to step up and be prepared to be the legit #1.
