Steelers signing RB Trey Sermon after rookie minicamp
The Pittsburgh Steelers are wrapping up their rookie minicamp this weekend, and there are times when players earn their way onto the 90-man offseason roster after the workouts.
On top of that, there are also times when veteran NFL players get invited to rookie camp, not just to round out the roster but also to give them another opportunity to make the team.
That’s exactly what happened to running back Trey Sermon with the Steelers, and according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report Sermon the Steelers are signing the veteran to a 1-year deal.

Sermon was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers out of Ohio State in the 3rd Round of the 2021 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he appeared in nine games and started two. He totaled 41 carries for 167 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown before being released that offseason. He was picked up off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles and appeared in two games, Weeks 4 and 5, in the 2022 season, before being placed on the Injured Reserve List.
On September 19, 2023, Sermon was signed to the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts, and was promoted to the active roster on September 23. He appeared in 14 games for the Colts in the 2023 season. He recorded 35 carries for 160 rushing yards.
Sermon will join rookie Kaleb Johnson, Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell as the primary running backs on the roster heading into training camp. With this signing you do have to wonder if the release of Cordarrelle Patterson isn’t a matter of it, but when.
Be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of OTAs, minicamp and training camp.
Smart to have Shampklin, Ward, and Sermon in training camp.
