Steelers vs. Jaguars, Preseason Week 1: Final Score and Highlights

The Pittsburgh Steelers will traveled as the visiting team for two of their three 2025 preseason games, and this is the first preseason game of the season. The Steelers invade Jacksonville to play the Jaguars with both teams looking for their first victory of the exhibition season, but also to get their players more work before the real games begin.

This was the first game action for many of the Steelers players and the hope is the team can build off the success they saw throughout the first two weeks of training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

In this article we will highlight the most important aspect of the game, the highlights. By quarter we will have big plays, including scoring plays, right here as well as score updates as the game progresses.

Let the 2025 season begin!

1st Quarter

The Jaguars started with the football, winning the coin toss, and Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville starters moved the ball into Pittsburgh territory with relative ease. However, when the field got short the Jaguars had to settle with a 41-yard field goal to make the score 3-0 with 7:41 remaining in the opening frame.

Mason Rudolph took over for the Steelers, and he wasted little time moving the football into Jacksonville territory. Attacking the middle of the field, the Steelers offense carved up the Jacksonville starting defense. When the field got short, it was Rudolph finding Darnell “Mount” Washington for the touchdown.

The touchdown made the score 7-3 with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter.

The Jaguars had the football in Pittsburgh territory when the opening quarter came to an end.

2nd Quarter

Nick Mullens took over for Trevor Lawrence on the second drive, and he was aided by a nice kickoff return on the Jaguars second drive of the game. Mullens quickly got the offense into field goal range, but the drive stalled and had to settled for a 40-yard field goal to make the score 7-6 with 12:19 left in the half.

After both teams failed to put points on the board with their next drives, the Steelers got the ball with 4:21 left in the half. Skylar Thompson took the team and moved them down the field with big gains to Scotty Miller and Max Hurleman.

When they got into a 1st-and-goal situation, Thompson found Hurleman in the end-zone for the second touchdown of the game.

The extra point was good, making the score 14-6 with 24 seconds left in the half.

Right when you thought the score would hold heading into halftime, the Jaguars sent out their field goal unit as time expired for a 70-yard field goal. The Cam Little kick was shockingly good!

This made the score at halftime Steelers 14, Jaguars 9.

3rd Quarter

The Steelers started with the football in the second half, and when they faced a 4th and short on the opening drive of the half, they chose to go for it instead of punting the ball away. They handed the ball to rookie Kaleb Johnson, who was stopped short of the yard to gain. The turnover on downs gave the Jaguars the ball already in Pittsburgh territory.

After a roughing the passer call negated a Nick Mullens interception, the Jaguars took the new life and moved it quickly into a first-and-goal situation. Mullens found Trenton Irwin for their first touchdown of the game, and would go for two after the score.

The conversion was no good, and the Jaguars kept the 15-14 lead with 11:21 left in the quarter.

Needing an answer, Skylar Thompson remained in the game and orchestrated another touchdown drive.

With the running game pretty much non-existent, the Steelers moved the ball primarily through the air. Chunk plays to Roc Taylor and Ke’Shawn Williams got the Steelers in the red-zone. Once there, it was a nice screen play to Trey Sermon for the touchdown.

The extra point was good, making the score 21-15 with 7:57 left in the 3rd quarter.

Following a Jacksonville three-and-out, Thompson continued to deliver big plays through the air. Roc Taylor and company moved the ball into the red-zone, and that was when the drive stalled. The last play of the 3rd quarter saw Thompson sacked on 3rd down and fumbled. Luckily, the Steelers recovered.

4th Quarter

The Steelers field goal unit was on the field to start the final quarter, and the 36-yard kick was good making the score 24-15 with 14:56 remaining.

Jacksonville’s ensuing drive was a good one with the jaguars taking advantage of several missed tackles by the Steelers secondary. To add insult to the matter, the scoring play saw Bhayshul Tuten get pushed roughly 5-yards into the end-zone for the touchdown.

The extra point was good, making the score 24-22 with 11:02 left in regulation.

With Skylar Thompson still in the game, the Steelers turned to the ground game to try and grind out the clock and finish the game with a win. When the ground game, mainly Lew Nichols, got them into striking range, it was Thompson who threw a beautiful pass, and tremendous catch, by Ke’Shawn Williams for the score.

The extra point made the score 31-22 with 5:16 left in the game.

The Jaguars and Steelers started emptying their benches when the Jaguars were able to get the ball into field goal range. The kick was good, making the score 31-25 and giving Jacksonville a shot to get a quick stop and the ball back.

The Jaguars got a quick three-and-out, and an opportunity to try and win the football game after the two-minute warning.

With 1:49 left and no timeouts the Jaguars took over at their own 19-yard line. Jacksonville got to the Pittsburgh 36-yard line, but that’s as close as they’d get as time ran out with the Steelers winning the game and moving their preseason record to 1-0.

FINAL SCORE: Steelers 31, Jaguars 25
