The Steelers add depth at QB and on the offensive line prior to Jaguars preseason game

The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 of the 2025 preseason this Saturday night, and prior to that game the team needed to add some depth at two positions.

One position was quarterback, this after Will Howard suffered a broken bone/finger on his throwing hand and won’t be able to play Saturday night. After Mike Tomlin said Aaron Rodgers will be given the day off Saturday, the majority of the preseason work, at least in Week 1, will fall on Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson.

To give them a third option, the team has signed QB Logan Woodside, who has experience with Arthur Smith when he was in Tennessee with the Titans. There is a good chance Woodside will get “garbage time” reps for the Steelers this Saturday in Jacksonville.

The other addition was offensive guard Andrus Peat. The need for Peat to be added was not just as an upgrade over what was currently on the roster, but with Isaac Seumalo getting the night off Saturday, Peat’s experience will be valuable to help them get through Week 1 of the preseason.

This per the Steelers official Twitter/X account:

To create these two roster spots on the 90-man roster, the team released back-up long snapper Tucker Addington and guard Nick Broeker.

To learn more about the two new players added to the roster, here is a brief bio from the Steelers official website:

Woodside was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He has also spent time with the Tennessee Titans (2020-21) and Atlanta Falcons (2022-23).

Woodside has appeared in 13 NFL games, including 11 for the Titans. He was on the Bengals practice squad in 2024.

Woodside played college football at Toledo where he appeared in 43 games. He completed 759 passes for 10,514 yards and 93 touchdowns.

Peat was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, spending nine seasons with them. He appeared in 111 games, with 102 starts for the Saints, and was named to the Pro Bowl three times (2018-2020).

Peat signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, appearing in 15 games, starting one.

Peat played college football at Stanford where he appeared in 40 games, with 27 starts. As a junior he was named first team All-American and All-Pac-12.

I’m kind of excited about the Peat pickup! Admittedly he was a big draft crush of mine. Didn’t live up to his draft slot, but could be a very nice player to have in case of emergency.

Don’t know the QB at all.

Art Smith has good familiarity with Woodside, from the Titans and Falcons. Woodside has been with the Bengals PS recently. Fair backup QB, no Charlie Batch, but no Mike Kruczek, either. Maybe this will get Woodside a shot for a more long-term situation.

Hey, have some respect for Mike Kruczek. He had the talent to not lose any of the six games he started with the greatest defense to ever lace them up in 1976.

Uh, yeah. Good runner, five turnovers… kinda think the defense helped a wee bit, as you rightly note. Far better than Hanratty would have been, IMO. Could have been worse.
