Top 5 Steelers position groups going into 2025
On the most recent episode of The Scho Bro Show podcast, Big Bro Scho and I continued our summer series of Top 5 Lists. This week, we did a top five list we had not done before as we ranked our top position groups on the Steelers at this time of the 2025 offseason. With me doing the series of PFF ranking the top 32 players in the NFL at each position, it was a topic I had been looking at recently.
As expected, we had a number of position groups that were the same, with us both taking the obvious choice at the top. Things got off a little bit after that as I chose a group that some may not even count or consider but I felt deserved recognition. After that we had very similar thoughts.
To start, let’s look at the top five position groups of the 2025 Steelers according to my brother Rich…
Big Bro Scho:
1. Outside Linebacker
2. Defensive Line
3. Offensive Line
4. Inside Linebacker
5. Running Back
The choice for outside linebacker was obvious. The entire NFL knows the Steelers are the cream of the crop at outside linebacker as even PFF put three players in the NFL’s top 32 from the Steelers.
The top position group on Rich’s list that I did not include was offensive line. Although I think they are a position group that could be much improved in 2025, when comparing them across the NFL they have a lot to prove. I would also put running back in a similar position.
Now let’s dive into my list…
Dave:
1. Outside Linebacker
2. Specialists
3. Inside Linebacker
4. Defensive Line
5. Safety
First of all, I decided to include the specialists because I think the Steelers hold a huge advantage there. The most important of them all, Chris Boswell is the best kicker in the NFL. The Steelers also have two quality punters on their roster at this time with Corliss Waitman ready in case Cam Johnston is not fully recovered from his knee injury. I also like Christian Kuntz as a long snapper as his name was not mentioned much in 2024 which typically means he’s doing a good job (as long snapper is a position where players generally only get mentioned when they have a bad snap or a penalty). I felt the position group needed recognition where some simply don’t even consider them.
I was very torn on which position group to put first between defensive line and inside linebacker. I ultimately went with inside linebacker because defensive line was such a concern before the draft. And with drafted players not always working out as well as teams hope, it’s tough to say that the Steelers are now fixed at the position based on a starter that has not had an NFL snap. So I gave a slight edge inside linebacker as the Steelers have all kinds of quality depth at the position.
Finally, I went with safety as my final position group sneaking into the top five. I think the Steelers might have a depth issue beyond the top three players, but when looking across the NFL, having three quality players at a position such as safety is a big asset.
I know it was bold, but notice I had no offensive position groups in my top five. In all honesty, the Steelers offense is much farther behind their defense. So even though it might be a strong position group for the Steelers offense, it doesn’t equate to being strong compared to the rest of the NFL.
So what do you think? Which list do you like better? What would be your top five list of Steelers position groups for 2025? Make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below.
