What will the Steelers next throwback uniform be?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are long overdue for a new throwback uniform. Sure, the past few seasons they’ve honored the teams of the 1970s by donning their block number jerseys, which are magnificent, but it has been a while since they genuinely went back to another uniform which had a different look about it.
This year the Steelers will unveil a new throwback, and a new helmet, and Art Rooney II confirmed this after the 2025 schedule was released.
“We are going to have a new throwback uniform this year, and with a new helmet to go with it,” said Rooney. “We’re planning to wear our new throwbacks for the Packers game on Sunday night, Oct. 26. It’ll be fun to wear our throwbacks against one of the older franchises in the league – that just seems to be appropriate. We’ll be doing our color rush uniforms late in the year. I think we’re going to do it for the Monday night game on Dec. 15 against the Miami Dolphins.”
When you look back at the throwbacks in the recent years, there have been many which caused quite a stir. Let’s take a look at some of the recent throwbacks:
Bumble Bees
The Bumble Bee uniforms were one of the most polarizing uniforms in the NFL when they were worn. You either loved them, or hated them, but they certainly did make a statement when they were worn. The Steelers wore these uniforms in 1934, and the throwbacks were worn from 2012-2016.
Gold Helmets
The first truly different throwbacks were the gold helmets with white pant throwbacks which went back to the 1960 Steelers. These throwbacks debuted with the 75th anniversary in 2007 until 2011. There were many memorable games in these uniforms, none greater than the Steelers blowing out the Steve McNair led Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football at Heinz Field with James Harrison having a career day.
Block Numbers and Grey Facemasks
2024 saw the Steelers wear a throwback which was different solely by the helmet design. Same shell, but they finally adhered to the grey facemask which the Steelers wore in their first two Super Bowl victories. It was a classic look, and should be used more than just last season when they honored the 1974 Super Bowl team.
So, what will the next throwback be? There are options out there which many people are hoping to see. The first jersey which gets brought up is the “Batman Jersey” which was worn in 1967. You can see the home black uniform below:
Another option would be to go back to 1962-1963 with a throwback which would resemble what the team wears as their practice jerseys currently. These are the uniforms being worn by the players in the photo atop this article:
If they wanted to re-do a once worn throwback, they could go all the way back to 1933 when the team donned the city of Pittsburgh crest on the middle of the jersey.

The Steelers wore this throwback in 1994 for just one season, so it wasn’t as if the throwback was worn for multiple years before being debuted once again.

Either ’62-63 or ’66-’67 are fine w/me. I wasn’t a fan of the ’33 Pirates throwback in ’94, and to me the ’60’s unis just stand out while still looking in place.
I’d dig the crest one, looks like a rugby jersey. If I was forced to put money on it, I’d say it’ll be the batman uni. It’s cool, but do it with a white helmet.
Yeah, that’s the Batman. Meant to recognize the Golden Triangle at the Point.
Scratch what I said, you like the ’33 uniform. Back in leather helmet days.
Love it! I also really love the bumblebee too. Could do them both with leather brown helmets too.
Bumblebees started in ’34. AB made the bumblebee look pretty good, along w/Roethlisberger.
